JUVENILE DELINQUENCY ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

THE EFFECT OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of juvenile delinquency on students’ performance in Agricultural Science in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. To achieve the purpose of this study, three null hypotheses were formulated to direct the study. Literature review was carried out in the variables and hypotheses directing the study. Expost facto research design was adopted for the study. A sample of two hundred (200) students were randomly selected for the study. The selection was done through the simple random sampling technique. The questionnaire was the major instrument used for data collection. To determine the reliability coefficient of the instrument a trial testing was carried out using split half reliability method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis was the statistical analysis technique adopted to test the hypotheses. The .05 level of significance was used for the statistical testing of each of the hypothesis. The results of the analysis revealed that: Drug abuse, aggressive behaviour and students’ truancy have a significant relationship with students performance in Agricultural Science. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that parents and teachers should effectively monitor their children from delinquent behaviour

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1   Background to the study
Every individual grow towards becoming a functional member of the society. In the process of growth he gains empowerment through school learning. Stakeholders in education industry such as government, missionaries, proprietors of school had invested huge sums of money and materials to ensure high performance of students under their care (Bola, 2003).
There has always been a diversity in performance of children in both primary and secondary institutions. While some students perform very well, others do the opposite and in some cases, students are withdrawn from school for low performance. This observation is made from the results of students over the years and students are observed to be deteriorating in achievement (Esuabana, 1997). Various reasons have been attributed to this failure. Among them include the different levels of intelligence, some socio-economic factors. The school environment, students attitudes, sex of students achievement motivation and students delinquent behaviour. Delinquent behaviour, simply means a behaviour that youngsters do that goes against the standard of the society, regardless whether the action is legal or illegal.
World youth report (2007) said that children delinquent behaviour has been constantly heard in the news and hardly a week passes without a report in any of the National dailies of serious anti social acts which have been committed by school children. Consequently, there is often an official pronouncement, which expresses anxiety about growing incidence of juvenile crimes.
A close observation of what is happening in our institutions of learning today will definitely show that delinquency, es
pecially juvenile is a very serious obstacle to the academic progress. World youth report, (2007) said that young people who are at the risk of becoming delinquent often live in different circumstances. For instance children who for various reasons including parental alcoholism, poverty, breakdown of the family, over crowding, abusive conditions in the home, the death of parents, orphans without the means of subsistence housing and other basic necessities are at great risk of falling into juvenile delinquency. The number of children in specially difficult circumstances is estimated to have increased from 80 millions to 160 millions between 2001-2006 (Ademiu, 2007).
Igbimoria (1990) viewed that juvenile offence in Nigeria do not operate in well organized gangs, but there have instances of assault and vandalism committed by small groups of juveniles. Today, other offences  committed by small groups of juveniles include looting and other acts of vandalism especially when encouraged during political campaigns and sex offences.
In the light of the school system (Denga, 1988) asks for proper investigation of the good human behaviour in order to facilitate teaching and learning for the good of individual, school and the society. Generally, it is the desire of all and sundry including the ones who perform below average to excel or to be accorded accolades. Though they may not outwardly imply that, but it has been observed that deep down their hearts, they desire excellent academic performance (Obi, 2004). Inspite of this however, a cursory look at the yearly school turn out results reveals that students fail massively in internal and externally administered examinations in Akwa Ibom State and Ikot-Ekpene Local Government Area in particular. For example a graphic picture of the mean failure rate in SSSIII state examination in Agricultural Science for 4 academic sessions from the year 2003-2004 is shown in table 1.

--> In the period under consideration, the average failure rate is above 50%. The normal expectation is that the failure rate should be lower than the pass rate. The reverse is the case. This failure is sufficiently high to give cause for concern.
Stakeholders in the education industry such as parents, school authorities, teachers, officials of the ministry of education and the students themselves are restive and concerned at the high casualty rate of agricultural science students in public examination.
It is easy to note from the above that poor performance of students in agricultural science is not linked to teacher-teacher variable alone. However, the teaching and learning process has so many other variables apart from the teachers to contend with.
The juvenile delinquency of the learner is a strong force in the learning process that has to be considered. The sphere of social behaviour (juvenile delinquency) constitutes one of the predominant factors that may impinge on students’ performance in Agricultural Science.

1.2   Theoretical framework
This section provides the theoretical background  and focuses on the theories that underlie social behaviour. This section will also provide an understanding of the relationship between social behaviour and academic performance.
The theories of determinant of behaviour and academic performance:
i.             Psychological field theory
ii.           Persuasive theory

1.2.1 Psychological Field Theory:
Psychological field theory was propounded by Kurt Lewin (1935, 1946), when he explored the situational determinant of behaviour. As a central concept of this theory, he developed the formula that behaviour (B) is a function (F) of person (P) and his environment (E).
Thus B = F  (P      E).
In this formulation, P and E are considered as being interdependent variables it is this formulation, which provides the foundation for his theoretical constructs of life space (LSP), which refers to the sum of all the environmental and personal factors in interaction. Because of the relative influence of the environment on behaviour, if a child lives in an environment that is psychologically very unhealthy, there is bound to be every likelihood that his life will be characterized by one form of instability, thus (Ezewu, 1987:65), opined that “to understand a child’s behaviour, one must consider both the individual and his environment as a constellation of dynamically interacting interdependent factors”.
Lewin’s concept of life space, equipped him to account for individual psychological development of the child. Also Lewin emphasized on child growth through greater differentiation of sub-cultures with his life space during the early age. The child differentiates between his childhood fantasy and the reality of life based on his experience, he begins to realize that the age of a person has much to do with his realistic approach and behaviour towards life and thus, the individual will later realize that there are wider margins or differences between the world and the objectives of the realistic world.  The position of Lewin is that an adolescents’ behaviour/learning is a combined product of environmental valences or pulls and his personality factors.
While some environmental forces and personal factors on the adolescents is nice, he can fairly comfortably accommodate the challenges arising for them, but when these combined forces are changing rapidly and are very demanding, he undergoes physiological torments, a sort of storm and stress which has an overt pressure on his behaviour.
The implication of the theory is that, the school environment and person interaction plays a significant role in the children’s behaviour. If students live or learn in unhealthy (drug abuse, aggressive and truant) environment, they are bound to be every likelihood that his life will be characterized by one form of instability that will affect his/her academic performance.

1.2.2 Persuasive theory
The theory of behaviour change was proposed by McGuire (1987). It focuses on attitude and behavioural changes as well as emphasizing the physiological characteristics that affect a person’s perception and response to change.
Persuasive theory of behavioural changes draws attention to influencing the individual learner. The message factors are the characterisstics of the message source that make it appropriate and effective for the learning situation. The source factors are the characteristics of the message source that make it interesting, relevant and persuasive for a particular learner. In extension, the parents, the teachers, the altitude used in competing, and the act may be a helpful or not worthy altitude of those who send the message etc.
McGuire mentions the important role that altitude and skill play toward behaviour changes as: (CASA).
i.             Credibility – is the character believable as the bearer of the lesson?
ii.           Attractive – is the character attractive or appealing?
iii.         Similarity – does the character or message have anything in common with the listener or is there a link between the new message and the ones previously delivered?
iv.         Authority – are the parents, teachers etc having the authority of expertise to deliver the lesson that would be understood by the learner?
The implication of this theory is that students learn when they find the learning situation comfortable, and when they consider the position of the instructor as showing concern and interest on the learner, persuasive theory is also concerned with the students social behavioural changes and ability as well as emphasized on the academic performance and response to teaching and learning process that affects their achievement.
The instructors are the teachers, parents etc. and can be replaced with the social behaviour of the individuals personality, while altitude can be the academic performance of the students. in addition, learning is rewarding when learners participate actively in the teaching-learning situation. We can hypothesize from here that the peer performance of the students is due to the observed behaviour and the altitude of those around us. Also, lack of confidence for the instructor causes non-participation in the teaching learning process by the learners. It is therefore important that significant others in the life of a child consider these factors to enhance their academic performance.

1.3   Statement of the problem
Observation shows that in Akwa Ibom State and Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area in particular, senior secondary certificate examination have not been encouraging (Ekanem, 2007). The rate of failure and poor academic performances in Agricultural science of senior secondary school system is a serious problem that requires the attention of all the stakeholders in education from the ministry of education to the students in Agricultural sciences. This has therefore become a source of concern to educators and planners, parents, teachers, government and the public. This concern is well founded on the fact that Nigeria as a country desires Agricultural technicians, and consultant that has to come to play through the wheel of Agricultural science.
The persistent low performances is Agricultural science by students has been tackled in various ways by parents, schools, educationists and the government in a bid to solve the problem of poor/low performance in Agricultural science in schools. Parent teachers association (PTA) in schools have been bridging the gap between parents and teachers with the view of overcoming the root of this problem as such they have provided buildings, desks, laboratory equipment etc. in some of the schools on the basis of uplifting the problem of students poor performance. Agencies like Non-Governmental organizations and government have done their best in improving the educational system/performance in Nigeria. Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), Education Trust Fund (ETF), etc, have been building and supplying materials but the problem seems to be magnified.  The government has avered teachers re-training, but the root of the problem is yet to resolve.
Since all the efforts made so far have not been able to solve the problem of poor performance of students in Agricultural science, the researcher is therefore motivated to find out if juvenile delinquencies do influence students performance in Agricultural science in Ikot Ekpene Local government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

1.4   Purpose of the study
The main purpose of this study was to find out whether delinquent behaviour influence SS II students performance in Agricultural Science in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. Specifically, the study sought to:
1.      Find out if students, drug abuse has any relationship with their performance in Agricultural science.
2.      Examine if aggressive behaviour has any relationship with students’ performance in Agricultural science
3.      Establish the relationship between truancy and students’ performance in Agricultural science.

1.5   Research questions
The following research questions were posed to guide the study:
1.          What is the relationship between drug abuse and students’ performance in Agricultural Science?
2.          To what extent has students aggressive behaviour related with students’ performance in Agricultural science?
3.          What is the relationship between truancy and students’ performance in Agricultural science?

1.6   Statement of hypotheses
The following hypotheses were tested in the study.
1.                   Drug abuse has no significant relationship with students performance in Agricultural Science.
2.                   Students aggressive behaviour has no significant relationship with students performance in Agricultural Science.
3.                   There is no significant relationship between truancy and students performance in Agricultural Science.

1.7   Assumptions of the study
The following assumptions are made that:
1.                   The performance of student is measurable variable.
2.                   The students in the study vary in the juvenile delinquency behaviour.
3.                   The instrument used in this study is valid and reliable to elicit response on students juvenile delinquency and it effect on performance.
4.                   The sample of students used in this study are the portion of the total population of students in 2007/2008.

1.8   Significance of the study
This study will be of benefit to students, parents, teachers and curriculum developers and the society at large.
To students it is hoped the results of this study will help them to uncover hidden potentials in them. By seeing the influence of certain behaviours like aggressiveness, altruistic tendencies, truancy and their interactional effect on fellow students, teachers, parents and on their learning potentials. The students will equally be in a better position to understand themselves in confined face of performance.
The result of this study will help teachers to understand more and will find it easy to deal with different categories of learners from different homes. Teachers will have less work load on, they will organize the teaching/ learning session in such a way that will induce students participation and reduce delinquent behaviours. Their energies will be preserved and teaching effectiveness will be ensured.
The curriculum planners would benefit since it will provide a basis for them to design the curriculum, bearing in mind various behaviours of individuals and possibly plan  realistic strategy for achieving the objectives and goals of the instructor. When the effects of the instruction is felt on our students and learners, the objectives and goals of education as enshrined in the educational policy and development plan will be achieved. Thus, the society will stand to benefit from this study, as there will be farewell to some of the unwanted behavior that will tend to hinder the performance of the students.
The knowledge gained from this study will assist government to design policies and programmes which will help enhance family cohesion so the parents will be able to relate better with their children. This will help the development of well-behaved individuals by modifying their behaviour properly.
The result will be of help to parent as it would improve their relationship with their children since parents are in a better position to understand their children with consideration. It will also act as an eye opener to parents for them to know that a close relationship with their children should be developed to check delinquent behaviour that affect their wards performance in school.

1.9   Delimitation of the study
This study is delimited to SS II students offering Agricultural science in 2007/2008 academic session in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. It is further delimited to the independent variable characterized into drugabuse, aggressive behaviour and truancy.
